12-18 MONTH PLAY BOOK

Your little one’s skills are changing every day. She is beginning to communicate more effectively. She is very mobile but is also learning to stop and focus on toys. Her understanding of how things work is developing and her fingers are learning how to manipulate objects.

This PLAY BOOK will guide you through this action-packed stage of development

It contains age appropriate games, organised into chapters (e.g. 12-13 months). The games focus on the pertinent milestones within that month & are demonstrated by photographs and/or videos. The instructions are simple to follow & the OT rationale for including that game has been provided.

Equipment Low table/couch and her favourite toy/treat

PositionStanding holding the seat of the chair while you kneel or sit behind her

Game Let her stand at one end of the couch/table holding onto the seat. Encourage her to move along holding the furniture for support until she reaches her favourite toy. You should move along with her to make sure she does not bump her face should she fall. You should however let her fall onto her bottom – it is an important lesson about balance and her level of ability. Give her lots of praise when she reaches her toy. Put the toy on the other end of the row of chairs and encourage her to move in the other direction. Go both directions 4/5 times

Featuring Charlie & that rattle

This game is called JUST CRUISING

It is an example from this Play Book

Why We Play This Game Walking like a crab while holding onto stable objects allows her to learn about moving her weight from side to side so that she can take a step. She will learn from the feedback (information) from her body that she is unstable and will use her balance skills to stay upright. When we hold a child’s hands and help them walk we (the adult) automatically anticipate (know) and compensate (make the changes) when they are about to fall which means they don’t have the opportunity to learn this skill for themselves
