Often when I speak to new parents about social development, talking is what comes to mind. It is often difficult to think about social interaction, without words. As adults we express ourselves so much with language that we forget how important non-verbal communication is. This is why messages often become misinterpreted over email or text message as you cannot see the facial expressions and gestures or hear the tone of voice. It is so important to develop these extra cues with your child long before they can talk as the frustration of not being understood leads to meltdowns. These skills will help them to communicate their needs with you. If you are struggling to develop these skills I suggest watching an episode or two of Shaun the Sheep. Shaun and his friends are masters of non-verbal expression.
